Car AC Not Cooling in Pakistan's Summer — Complete Diagnosis & Fix Guide

In Pakistan's 45°C+ summers, a car without working AC is a genuine health risk. When your AC starts blowing warm air, you need to diagnose and fix it fast. Here's a systematic guide to every possible cause.

Cause 1: Low Refrigerant (Gas) — Most Common

Over time, AC systems lose refrigerant through micro-leaks or worn seals. Low gas means insufficient cooling.

Symptoms: AC blows cool but not cold, compressor cycles frequently, visible ice on AC lines
Fix: AC gas recharge (R134a refrigerant)
Cost in Pakistan: Rs. 2,000–4,000 for a basic recharge | Rs. 4,000–8,000 if leak detection and repair included

Cause 2: Dirty/Clogged Cabin Air Filter

The cabin filter catches dust — Pakistan's dusty environment clogs it every 6,000–10,000 km. A blocked filter restricts airflow dramatically.

Symptoms: AC runs but airflow is weak, musty smell from vents
Fix: Replace cabin air filter
Cost: Rs. 500–1,500 for the filter + Rs. 300–500 labour

Cause 3: Faulty AC Compressor

The compressor is the heart of your AC. When it fails, nothing works. Common in older high-mileage vehicles.

Symptoms: Loud grinding/rattling noise when AC is on, AC never cools at all, compressor clutch not engaging
Fix: Compressor replacement or rebuild
Cost: Rs. 15,000–50,000 depending on vehicle and whether original or aftermarket

Cause 4: Dirty Condenser (Behind Radiator)

The condenser releases heat from the AC system. On Pakistani roads, it gets clogged with insects, plastic bags, and dirt — especially on lower vehicles.

Symptoms: AC only works when moving, fails at idle or in traffic
Fix: Pressure wash the condenser from the front of the car
Cost: Rs. 500–1,500 at any workshop

Cause 5: Faulty AC Pressure Switch or Thermistor

Electronic sensors regulate compressor operation. A failed sensor can prevent the compressor from engaging even when refrigerant is full.

Cost: Rs. 1,500–5,000 for sensor + fitment

Cause 6: Broken AC Belt (older cars)

On older vehicles with belt-driven compressors (Mehran, old Corolla), a snapped belt means no compressor.

Cost: Rs. 1,500–3,500 for belt + labour

DIY Checks Before Going to the Workshop

  1. Check cabin filter (behind glove box on most cars) — if grey, replace it
  2. Look at the condenser through the front grille — if clogged with debris, wash it
  3. With AC on, listen for compressor clutch engaging (click sound)
  4. Check AC belt on older cars
