How to Maintain Your Car's Cooling System in Pakistan

How the Cooling System Works

Your engine generates enormous heat during combustion. The cooling system circulates coolant (antifreeze-water mixture) through the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing heat, then releasing it through the radiator. A failure in any component can lead to overheating within minutes — potentially destroying the engine.

Key Components to Maintain

Coolant (Antifreeze)

Coolant degrades over time. Electrolysis corrosion attacks aluminium components when coolant pH drops too low.

  • Replace every 2 years or 40,000 km — whichever comes first
  • Use correct type: most Pakistani cars use long-life coolant (green or pink/red for newer models)
  • Never mix green and pink/red coolant — they use incompatible inhibitor chemistry
  • Always mix with distilled water (50:50 ratio) — not tap water, which deposits minerals

Radiator Care

  • Inspect externally every 6 months — Pakistan's insects and dust block radiator fins
  • Clean external fins with a gentle water spray from the engine side outward
  • Avoid bending fins — they're delicate aluminium
  • Flush radiator internally every 4 years to remove scale deposits

Thermostat

The thermostat is a spring-loaded valve that opens at operating temperature (usually 87–92C) to allow coolant flow. A stuck-open thermostat means the engine never reaches proper temperature (wasting fuel, increasing wear). A stuck-closed thermostat causes rapid overheating.

  • Signs of stuck-open: engine takes forever to warm up, heater blows cold
  • Signs of stuck-closed: rapid overheating within 5–10 minutes of driving
  • Replacement cost: Rs 500–2,000 including labour

Radiator Cap

The radiator cap maintains system pressure. A faulty cap causes coolant to boil at lower temperatures, leading to overheating.

  • Check rubber seal condition — if cracked or flattened, replace
  • Cost: Rs 200–600

The 2-Minute Monthly Coolant Check

  • When engine is cold, check coolant level in the transparent reservoir
  • Level should be between MIN and MAX marks
  • Check the colour — bright green, pink, or blue = good. Brown/rusty = needs flushing
  • Look under the car for coolant drops after parking — sweet smell = coolant leak
