Your engine generates enormous heat during combustion. The cooling system circulates coolant (antifreeze-water mixture) through the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing heat, then releasing it through the radiator. A failure in any component can lead to overheating within minutes — potentially destroying the engine.
Coolant degrades over time. Electrolysis corrosion attacks aluminium components when coolant pH drops too low.
The thermostat is a spring-loaded valve that opens at operating temperature (usually 87–92C) to allow coolant flow. A stuck-open thermostat means the engine never reaches proper temperature (wasting fuel, increasing wear). A stuck-closed thermostat causes rapid overheating.
The radiator cap maintains system pressure. A faulty cap causes coolant to boil at lower temperatures, leading to overheating.
