Common Engine Problems in Pakistani Cars: Diagnosis and Fix Guide

Problem 1: Engine Overheating

Common causes in Pakistan:

  • Low coolant level — most common cause. Top up immediately.
  • Blocked radiator — Pakistani dust blocks fins. Clean with low-pressure water.
  • Failed thermostat — Replacement Rs 500–2,000
  • Failed water pump — listen for growling from front of engine. Rs 2,500–8,000
  • Blown head gasket — milky oil is key sign. Very expensive: Rs 25,000–80,000

Immediate action: Pull over, turn off engine. Wait 20 minutes. If overheating returns quickly, stop driving and tow to workshop.

Problem 2: Hard Starting

  • Weak battery: Most common cause. Rs 18,000–30,000 to replace
  • Dirty air filter: Rs 800–2,500 to replace
  • Worn spark plugs: Rs 1,500–6,000 for a set
  • Fuel pump failure: Rs 8,000–25,000 to replace

Problem 3: Excessive Oil Consumption

Common in older Pakistani cars (150,000+ km). Causes: worn piston rings or valve stem seals. Interim: use higher viscosity oil. Check level every 500 km.

Problem 4: Black Smoke from Exhaust

Running too rich. Common causes: clogged air filter, faulty oxygen sensor, damaged fuel pressure regulator. Start with air filter — cheapest fix first.
